How the fake WSL helps educate fans about the women’s game

The legendary Women’s Super League soccer game that has attracted tens of thousands of users hopes to play an important role in educating soccer fans about the women’s game.

More than 32,000 people registered for Fantasy WSL last year when it started and this time the game has been renewed. It includes brand new features, including a new design, power-ups and gameplay features aimed at deepening fan engagement.

Specifically, users can use the new ‘verified leagues’, where creators can control their own mini-leagues within the game, and share women’s football content with their fans. Updated player profiles are also available, with naming guides where available, providing more insight into individual athletes and their careers.

Each player profile also has a ‘buy shirt’ button, making it easy for users to buy their favorite player’s shirt directly through the game. This game goes a long way to help educate football fans about the women’s game, to help bring them up to speed with all the latest clubs in the league and players.

A recent survey revealed that the introduction of Fantasy WSL helped 80% of users feel more educated about each player in the WSL after playing, and 77% confirmed that they are more likely to watch teams on TV than the one they support.

Fantasy WSL owner, founder and CEO of Even Sports, Jimmy Thompson said: “We recognize the role that fantasy football has to play in educating users about the WSL, and the core of our work is to ensure that the technology we use reflects this.

“That’s why our in-game formulas reflect exactly how women play football, instead of using standard football methods that are often associated with the men’s game.”

Although the game is now open to users, the teams will not be closed until the WSL returns on September 21st.
