‘I know what it means to the fans’

Mohamed Salah is determined to build on the success Liverpool have seen so far in the 2024/25 campaign when they face Manchester United on Sunday.

The Reds have picked up two Premier League wins under new manager Arne Slot so far – with a 2-0 win over Ipswich Town and a 2-0 win over Brentford in their opening league games.

Their biggest challenge yet, will come on Sunday, when they face rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford. Liverpool forward Salah, who has scored more goals against United than any other team, hopes his team can continue to do well.

“I just go to the game, try to focus on the game and win the game,” he told the team’s press team. “I know what it means to the fans and the city, so I always try to help the team and score goals.

“If we score goals, we have a better chance to win the game, so I always focus on the game, I try to help the team win the game.

“As a player you feel like you already know everything there is in the game, you are calm and you know football more than before now. When you arrive [through] you’re really young, you’re happy most of the time and you can’t control your emotions in the game. But now you can handle it well. Now you can control your emotions in the game and try to set a good example for the younger players.

“The system is very different but I think we are getting used to it, especially the big team, because we have been with the same manager for seven or eight years. Now we are getting used to the new manager. Everything is going well so far, so hopefully we can continue like that and win big trophies.”

Liverpool will be hoping to improve on their results against United last season after coming up top in December and April against the Red Devils. Erik ten Hag’s side saw Liverpool to victory in the FA Cup – leading the Reds 4-3.
