‘I’d be happy to disappoint King Charles III’

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has joked he would be ‘happy to embarrass’ King Charles III after discovering he is a Burnley fan.

Postecoglou was among the Australians invited to Buckingham Palace this week and is now preparing his Spurs team to face the Clarets on Saturday. Although he was an honored guest at the Palace, Postecoglou did not get the chance to meet the king face to face.

In the pre-match press conference, Postecoglou was told of the irony that the king is actually a Burnley fan.

“Maybe that’s why they kept him away from me! I’d be happy to disappoint him in that. No problem,” he replied.

“I didn’t get within ten feet of the King and if I had gotten any closer I would have asked him about the Parthenon Marbles and probably would have been kicked out.

“It was fun for me, my wife. These experiences are just lucky because of the position I’m in, not who I am.

“What my wife and I are trying to do is focus on it and seeing the people out there and hearing their stories, the joy they have in being there, it’s important to me and my wife to see how important it is to them. When you’re in that space, it’s special.

“We got an invitation from the Australian government. Me and the other Aussies in the team, Mile [Jedinak, first-team coach]Scott [Munn, chief football officer]Charli Grant from the women’s group.

“It was fun, a different experience. It’s really inspiring because the people we met there are working for charities, good causes, people in the military, people who are real heroes of the community.

“They know who I am and come to say hello, but if you ask them about who they are and their lives, you see a lot of amazing people who are doing a lot in the communities, often without much publicity from the community.

“I could see how happy they were to be there because finally there was some recognition from them. The strange thing was that the sun was shining in London so we had a really nice afternoon.”

Tottenham will see off Burnley with a win in north London on Saturday. The Clarets need three points and Nottingham Forest to lose to Chelsea later on to have any realistic chance of survival in the Premier League given their extremely low goal difference.
