“The bowlers came to the party first,” Rohit said bcci.tv. “They got the wickets we needed, and when we went in, we had to take a little risk to get the result. I know the result could have gone either way, but I was fine with it. And so was the result,” the coach said. [Gautam Gambhir] and other players because you have to have the courage to take those decisions and go and play that way. When things are in place, everything looks good. And that’s where I can change quickly, when things go wrong. Everyone would have started criticizing the decision we took and all that but what matters is what we think inside this dressing room. And that was what mattered. And that’s what we went with in this game.

“It was a very clear plan that we wanted a result, how to get a result. Everyone started to find answers to that. I think it was a special series. It could have been overlooked.”

“For me, anger goes hand in hand with your actions,” he said. “It’s not about my reaction: the kind of batting we do, the kind of positioning we do, the kind of bowling we do; that to me is violence.

“Look, without the help of ten other players, and, obviously, the people sitting in the dressing room, this wouldn’t have happened when we lost two days, two and a half days actually, it’s very easy for everyone to just walk away from the goal that we had to win this Test match. When we got here on the fourth morning , first things first, see [Bangladesh] they were hitting and we needed to get them out. We needed seven wickets quickly, so I thought it all started there.”

Both as a batsman and a leader, Rohit has transformed India into prioritizing victory above all else. He said his style of being a captain is based on trusting his judgment and decisions.

“When you play at such a high level, you need to have everything,” Rohit said. “You have to be calm, think smart. There are many decisions you have to make on the field. Not all decisions will go your way, but you have to support and use your knowledge, use your knowledge. That’s what I do, I’ve been there enough to trust my judgment that I make on the field, the decisions that I make on the field , then I go so the players around me are open to suggestions, but at the end of the day, I trust my mind and I trust my judgment, and that’s all that matters.”

Rohit: Another key catch that changed the game

Rohit was also impressed with India’s performance, especially catching the slips, during the Test series against Bangladesh. It was Yashasvi Jaiswal who set the tone on day one in Kanpur, where he took a smart, low catch to dismiss Zakir Hasan for a duck. Then, in Bangladesh’s second innings, Jaiswal completed another sharp catch, this time at gully, to return a well-set Shadman Islam for 50 and accelerate India’s push to victory.

“I was recently informed about the 24 fish we caught, we took 23 of them, which is a good result especially in slips,” said Rohit.

“You don’t often see in India the ball going through the slips. But the guys at the back were very sharp and to take those points, it might look easy on TV, but it’s not, trust me, because they’re standing a lot further than they usually do, so all those catches that come in the way , they are very difficult to take those things that are caught, and I saw them on the right.

“And Dilip [T Dilip, fielding coach] it is obvious that he helps with the players. Another important, game-changing contribution.”
