India vs New Zealand 2024/25, IND vs NZ 1st Test Match Report, October 16 – 20, 2024

New Zealand 402 (Ravindra 134, Conway 91, Jadeja 3-72) and 110 for 2 (Young 48*, Ravindra 39*, Bumrah 2-29) scored India 46 (Pant 20, Henry 5-15, O’Rourke 4-22) and 462 (Sarfaraz 150, Pant 99, O’Rourke 3-92) by eight wickets

A thrilling Bengaluru Test reached its deserved climax, with New Zealand working hard to complete their first Test win over India in 36 years. Under an overcast sky, the ball rotated well, Jasprit Bumrah threatened to get a wicket after every second over, and the crowd cheered almost every ball, but New Zealand held on all out to reach 107 when things settled down. .
Will Young had a cooling effect after Bumrah got Tom Latham the second ball of the day, but Devon Conway did his thing – jumping, body blows, but not playing loose shots. When Bumrah finally got Conway for 17 runs off 39 balls, he was at the end of his spell and New Zealand had already scored 35. The hosts did their best, saving at least 11 runs in that period.
But again India’s lack of fielding came back to haunt them. They didn’t have a third seamer to take advantage of the conditions, and Young and Rachin Ravindra chipped away at the remaining runs with relative ease.

When Bumrah bowled, however, he struggled to see where the next run would come from. He bowled 22 shots in eight overs, keeping the movement out. Latham may have thought he had an accurate inswinger covered, but the ball bounced back to find him. Conway thought he had closed the angle around the wicket, but this one turned after the throw, began to change his path between the chops and reached Conway, hitting the outside edge and closing in on him.

Bumrah was in his seventh over now, and Ravindra, the centurion of the first innings, all but sealed the deal when he got two boundaries in the first three balls he faced. He steered the first one behind square, then got a rare loose ball from Bumrah – full on the pads.

Young then bowled and hit Ravindra Jadeja for boundaries in his first over to settle the package. Not hoping that Bengaluru’s weather would hold after lunch, the two batsmen attacked the spinners to put a nice little bow on top. Young’s thumb to Kuldeep Yadav was like Mark Waugh.

India made a stunning comeback from being bowled out for 46 in the first innings, but in the end, New Zealand hung on long enough to complete their third win over India and their first since 1988.
