India vs New Zealand 2024/25, IND vs NZ 2nd Test Match Report, October 24 – 28, 2024
India 156 route New Zealand 259 and 255 (Phillips 48, Blundell 41, Jadeja 3-72, Ashwin 2-97) for 359 runs
The day did not start well for India as they went to the experienced spinners. The first ball from Ashwin produced an edge which Rohit Sharma did not address. Tom Blundell and Phillips added a quick 33 to the overnight score before Jadeja claimed his first wicket of the match, a swing that went past Blundell on the inside edge.
Santner thought he had a half-volley to hit for six, but the pitch played its tricks and the toe of the bat would have sent it too far. Ashwin produced an edge from Tim Southee, which Rohit accepted this time.
At the end of the innings, Ashwin was denied a wicket as India failed to review, but Ajaz’s slog-sweep in the next over ended up being caught at deep midwicket. Washington Sundar ran to his right and extended his long arms, but this meant that his chances of taking five runs in the match were gone. He was not perfect in the game. Don’t be surprised if he gets promoted by hitting.
The last wicket was a lazy performance from both Washington and William O’Rourke. Phillips, who hit two sixes, wanted to fake a strike and caught Washington lying at deep cover. A split second now loomed, and O’Rourke took it casually, not expecting to be thrown at the end. Jadeja showed quick thinking by diverting his way into the stumps as he expressed his displeasure with Washington.
