IPL 2025 auction: BCCI begins final process with franchises; holds talks on RTM and salary cap

Although i Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 the auction is far away, the excitement is already stirring, especially in the upcoming big auction. This auction requires all franchises to re-enter their players on the auction block, while allowing the retention of a select few. Player retention guidelines are currently being discussed, adding to expectations.

BCCI is starting the final process

I Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) preparations for the final strategy have begun. The IPL franchise has proposed to increase the number of players they can retain for the next three seasons. Opinions vary from club to club on the number of players to keep.

Franchises push for more retention

As reported by Cricbuzz, most of the 10 IPL teams have asked for a higher retention rate compared to the last round. In 2021, the BCCI allowed the retention of up to four players, with certain restrictions on Indian and overseas players. This year, franchises are encouraging more retention, some are proposing up to eight, while a few prefer no retention at all.

Different opinions about retention and salary breaks

Acting CEO of BCCI and head of IPL Hemang Amin recently had a conversation with franchise CEOs to get their views on the retention policy and salary estimate for the next three years. Most franchises have asked for five to seven players to be retained, with one proposing eight, while a few teams have opted for no players and only RTMs. The BCCI is committed to announcing its final decisions at the upcoming owners’ meeting. In addition, the team managers were also asked about the players’ bag, with different opinions. The general consensus suggests a salary cap between INR 110-120 crore, with a possible increase of around INR 20 crore. Not to mention, the current cap is INR 100 crore.

A discussion of the impact player rule

Additionally, discussions also included the Impact Player rule. Although media rights holders seem to be in favor, the coaching staff is not satisfied. Reports suggest that the IPL governing body is expected to retain the Impact Player rule for now.
