IPL 2025 – Considering the workload of the players, there is no increase in the number of matches played

There will be a total of 74 matches played in IPL 2025, the same as the previous three seasons. That number, however, is ten less than the 84 games listed for the IPL in 2022 when media rights for the 2023-27 cycle are sold.

In the tender document for the new rights cycle, the IPL has listed a different number of matches per season: from 74 matches each in 2023 and 2024, 84 matches each in 2025 and 2026, and a maximum of 94 matches in the final year . of the 2027 agreement. ESPNcricinfo has found that one important reason the IPL decided not to have 84 matches in 2025 is to help India’s international players manage their careers. India are currently favorites to win their third consecutive World Test Championship, scheduled from June 11 at Lord’s, and the BCCI wants to ensure that the players get enough rest as part of their preparation if they are fit.

Currently, the IPL dates for the 2025 season have not been finalized but the window is likely to extend between March and the last week of May. “We never talked about organizing 84 matches in IPL 2025 as we also have to solve the burden of the players due to the increase in matches,” said Jay Shah, the outgoing president of the BCCI. Economic Times recently. “Though (84 matches) is part of the contract, it is up to the BCCI to decide whether to schedule 74 or 84 matches.”

In 2022, IPL became one of the richest sports leagues in the world (in terms of value per match) with media rights sold for INR 48,390.5 crore (USD 6.2 billion approx.). The rights were sold in all four packages: A (TV rights in the Indian subcontinent), B (digital rights in the subcontinent), C (digital rights in India for a special package of high-profile matches – including the finals and finals. – from mid-18 and 22 per season) and D (world media rights across five different regions).

The total number of games per season, the IPL said, will also specify the number of games in package C, also known as the special package. The package includes the tournament opener, weekend evening games, and four playoffs, including the final. While the opening match and playoffs will be mandatory, the IPL will decide the number and which evening matches from the double headers will be included in the package, based on the total number of matches in the season.

A season total of 74 games (as was the case in 2023 and 2024) means that the special package has 18 games. If there are more than 74 games in a season, special packages will double for every additional ten games. So if there are 84 games in a season, the special packages will increase to 20 and if the tournament has 94 games, the special package will have 22 games.
