With IPL 2025 mega auction upcoming, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering a significant change in its player retention policy. A special provision for the retention of uncapped players is being considered to deal with the rising number of young talents in the league.
Special final rule for uncapped IPL players
The impressive consistent performance of the players who did not play in the recent IPL seasons made them a very valuable asset for the franchises. Teams are increasingly willing to let go of these players who have been nurtured through their systems. Acknowledging this, the BCCI is considering allowing teams to retain more uncapped players before the next big auction.
“Every franchise can be allowed to keep two or three players who have not played under the additional slot. Franchises have invested heavily in developing these young talents and are committed to retaining them,” a source close to the development was quoted as saying in TOI.
The IPL 2024 season has seen the emergence of several uncapped stars who have played a vital role in the success of their respective teams. Players love it Nitish Reddy, Mayank Yadav, Ashutosh Sharma again Shashank Singh they have shown their skills, making them hot spots in franchise cricket.
The BCCI is expected to finalize the final rules, including a possible special provision for uncapped players, in a meeting with IPL franchise owners this week.

IPL franchises eye a big bag, a lot of savings
According to reports, a major increase in the team fund, which could be up to INR 120 crore, and an increased retention limit of six players, including Right To Match (RTM) options, are on the table of the IPL Governing Council.
The franchise’s chief executive confirmed the possibility of a fund increase, suggesting a 20-25% increase would be appropriate. Although there seems to be consensus on this, the number of reserves is expected to be a controversial issue, where franchises have different preferences.
“I think (increasing the fund) is definitely possible. A typical increase should be anywhere between 20 to 25 percent and hence anything in the range of Rs 120 crore to 125 crore will be a fair deal. Most franchises would agree with it,” an executive of one of the IPL franchises told PTI.
“Obviously, continuing to maintain the core is very important going forward. Six may be allowed (retentions) including several RTM cards with at least one non-included player retained in the mix. But there may be some debate about the number of those held overseas.
“There are teams like Delhi Capitals (Jake Fraser-McGurk and Tristan Stubbs) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (Pat Cummins, Heinrich Klaasen and Travis Head), who would want to keep more than one overseas,” IPL source added.
