“He is contemporary, he had a good season in the IPL. I think he is at the right age when he is young, he will come up with new ideas. He knows most of the players, especially those who play white football as they were part of the IPL teams. So I think it’s refreshing. And we also know Gautam, he is no nonsense. He will have his own ideas too. And the good thing about him is that he has a mature team. You have a stable team, a mature team,” Shastri said while talking to ICC Review.

The importance of player management

Shastri emphasized the important role of player management in Gambhir’s new role. He pointed out that even seasoned players can benefit from new ideas and that understanding the strengths, attitudes and personalities of team members is important. The Mumbaikar hopes that Gambhir’s recent involvement in cricket will help him in this regard.

“I think even though you might think you’re mature, you might benefit from new ideas. So I think it’s going to be good times. Obviously, player management becomes key as a coach. So it will be interesting to see how it goes. I think he has the tools, he has the tools and he has the experience. It’s just a question of understanding his players as quickly as possible. What are their strengths, what kind of people are they and what kind of spirit do they have? What is their personality? A lot happens after understanding a person. I think that will be his most important work, which I think should not be a problem because he is a modern person,” shastri added.

Shastri also highlighted Gambhir’s extensive experience with many of India’s current players due to his involvement in the IPL and legends cricket. This familiarity, according to Shastri, will help Gambhir in managing the team and implementing his strategies.

“He has seen these foreign boys, he has faced many boys who might have played with KKR as well as Lucknow (Super Giants) while he was there. He has always been in the circuit, when he finished cricket and not long ago, he is still there, playing famous cricket,” concluded Shastri.
