The one who ran ahead In Jabeur will not play the US Open this year. The Tunisian trailblazer is out with a shoulder injury. The news was announced shortly after Thursday’s draw at Flushing Meadows, with Jabeur replaced by Elise Mertens, the tournament’s highest-ranked player.
Mertens becomes the No.33 seed and will be replaced by a lucky loser or winner. The Belgian will face Veronika Kudermetova in the first round.
Jabeur has dealt with a knee injury for most of the season, but he recently missed the Citi Open in Washington, DC, because of his shoulder. He played in Toronto, but was again forced to withdraw from Cincinnati.
“I’m really saddened to announce that my shoulder won’t be on the mend for the US Open,” Jabeur wrote on Instagram. “I feel I have to give 100 percent and today I still can’t. Life has its ups and downs, but sometimes in the bad times we all need to find the good in it. This year has been very difficult for me, but I know somewhere there is light.
“I promise when I get my strength back, I will come back stronger.”
Jabeur, who won the Grand Slam three times, is only 16-14 this season. He has reached the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros, and the third round at Wimbledon.
