Jack Catterall’s Defeat: World Title Ticket Shot?

Promoter Eddie Hearn hopes his boxer, WBO No. 6-ranked Jack Catterall, will be in the running for a world title after defeating former light welterweight champion Josh Taylor via a twelve-round unanimous decision. Last Saturday night in their rematch at the First Direct Arena in Leeds, England.

The grueling clinch-and-jab style that Jack Catterall uses to win his fights puts him on par with Shakur Stevenson. Catteral is a version of Shakur but without the speed, talent, or pedigree he has.

No champ at 140 will want to fight Catteral because he’s passed out and not popular in the US Why would any champ want to fight Catteral when they can’t fight for real, Shakur?

Catterl has shown no talent that suggests he can beat ANY of the current world champions or killers:

– Gary Antoine Russell
– Jamaine Ortiz
– Elvis Rodriguez
– Shojahon Ergashev
– Brian Norman Jr.
– Jaron Ennis

Those guys are too strong and they can chase Catterall to stop him. If Hearn wants Catterall to earn his stripes, throw him forward and let him see what his fighting style is. [hug, jab, and run] can do against these dangerous punchers.

A Humble Proposal: Catterall vs. Ennis

Since Hearn won’t get Catterall’s title shot next, he has to feed Jaron ‘Boot’ Ennis. The fight will get tons of interest in the UK if not the US, and Catterall will have a good excuse after the loss. He can only say that he is fighting a welterweight who is considered the best in the world.

Hearn seems confident that he will be able to get Catterll the next title shot against either of the pair:

  • Teofimo Lopez [WBO]: Hearn is banking on the Saudis will want to make a fight between Teofimo and Catteral. I don’t see it. That doesn’t happen. Why would the Saudis want to spend their money on the Teofimo-Catterall fight when they can get a lot of people, it’s more fun to watch Teofimo fight like Matias. Catteral is very boring.
  • Subriel Matias [IBF]: Heavy hitter Matias has a fight scheduled against Liam Paro on June 15 in Puerto Rico. If Hearn makes it financially viable for Matias to fight Catterall, this could happen. Matias is at a much higher level power-wise than Taylor, and it’s going to end badly for Catterall, who can’t punch and just get tough. That approach will not work for Matias.
  • Devin Haney [WBC]: Devin has a responsibility that Sandor Martin needs to take care of next. If Haney beats him, he’ll be looking for a popular opponent that will sell PPVs. Sorry, Catterall, right? That’s a PPV disaster if Haney picks him.

This fight showed that sometimes being the undisputed champion isn’t something that happens, as Taylor (19-2, 13 KOs) looks empty, and that’s not because Catterall (29-1, 13 KOs) looks. big.

Catterall’s Performance: Not Championship Caliber

Catterall did not look impressive with all the catching, tackling, and running he was doing. Catterll was fighting a guy who was never as good as some thought he was when he became the undefeated champion three years ago in 2021 after defeating Josh Ramirez and Regis Prograis.

“A war that may stay in Riyadh. He is talking about USA vs. England,” said promoter Eddie Hearn to Boxing News on the topic of Jack Catterall’s proposed fight against WBO light welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez needing to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to have ANY chance of happening.

“We also have Subriel Matias fighting Liam Paro in the IBF championship. [WBC 140-lb champion] Devin Haney fights Sandor Martin. Let’s see what happens with Teofimo. “There are a lot of options, but after playing like that in a fight like that, it’s very easy to fight for the world title,” said Hearn.
