“I was happy to collect all the belts without a doubt,” said Jaron “Boots” Ennis before defending the IBF welterweight belt against David Avanesyan. “July 13 is going to be fireworks,” Ennis continued, “don’t miss it.” It’s been a long time since Ennis was seen in the ring, over a year, in fact. Suffice it to say, Ennis makes it clear that he doesn’t want to have such a bad time on his hands again. “Staying busy is the key,” he says. “Having this time off will not bother me at all. I just want to get back in the ring.”
Ennis will be facing Avanesyan in front of a home crowd in his hometown of Philadelphia, and he has no intention of disappointing. “We didn’t have a big fight here, I don’t know how long, this is what the city needs. This homecoming is everything. It will be a blessing to come out in front of my friends and family and finally shine. Knowing that I have my hood and my city behind me, it’s a blessing and I’m going to keep dressing for those guys.”
Although he holds one of the world’s four major welterweight titles, Ennis is confident that he is the top man in his weight class. “What makes me the best in the class?” Ennis asked. “I can do everything, anything you want, I got it.” As for Avanesyan: “It’s a better fight than Cody Crowley but I’m going to beat him, break him and get a knockout!” Avanesyan, of course, has other plans. “A lot of people say ‘you’re crazy’ but this is my life,” said the underdog. “I only know boxing – so he calls me and says ‘you are fighting’ and I start training. I think this is a 50-50 battle. Small, Strong, very good fight.”
Avanesyan may believe that Saturday’s fight will be 50-50, but many analysts may beg to differ. Ennis is considered one great fighter away from a true star. However, boxing has strange things happen, so no one knows. Indeed, one of the main reasons why fans find themselves watching. And, if the 27-year-old Ennis continues to use his career effectively, many fans can see what the excitement is all about. There’s a good reason the Philly native wants to keep busy.
