Jayson Tatum spoke honestly about his MVP goals and that he won’t let that get in the way of his team’s overall success.
Tatum finished outside the top five in MVP voting last season, despite being one of the leaders in scoring, assists, and assists throughout the regular season.
He is not looking to promote his individual game by offering anything else.
“We’re not chasing the MVP, despite them calling us games,” Tatum said after the preseason win against the Nuggets. “But if I’m in that conversation, that means we’re one of the best teams. That means I’m playing the right way, and everyone in the team is succeeding, and we’re going in the right direction.”
Tatum is arguably the best player on the Celtics and many people thought he would rise to the next level last season, yet his teammate Jaylen Brown collected the ECF MVP and Finals MVP awards.
“Everybody should have their own goals,” Tatum said. “And we are all mature enough and we know what it means to be successful as a team, that nothing gets in the way of what we are trying to achieve and to be a special and better place than last year and even better this year.
“Whether guys want to make the All-Defensive team, All-Star, or be the MVP, you have to be able to go after that. That means you have a hell of a year, in charge, by being the best version of yourself, which everyone wants to be. “
