Joe Mazzella: Celtics “Strike New Goal” – Basketball Insiders
It’s no secret that Boston Celtics coach Joe Mazzella has a different mindset compared to his peers. However, it has worked well for him as he has become a champion as a coach. With the new season fast approaching, many have been wondering if the Celtics are ready to defend their title now that they are “in the hunt”. However, Mazzella has a different way of looking at the year ahead as he explains on the Locked On Celtics Podcast.
“The phrase ‘defending the title’ is a passive-aggressive term. If you look at animals, some of the strongest animals are not defensive; they are the most aggressive, and they attack the most,” said Mazzella. “Whether you win or not, the way you think will not change. You have to understand what goes into winning and losing, commit to the details every day, and stay aggressive. You are not defending something; he is attacking a new goal.”
The head coach also accepted the challenge of being the team everyone is looking to eliminate this year.
“People will say the goal is on our backs, but I hope it’s on our foreheads between our eyes,” said Mazzella on the Boston Celtics’ upcoming season.
Boston will open the new year on October 22n.d as they battled the rival New York Knicks.
Joe Mazzulla and the Boston Celtics Are Ready to Repeat as NBA Champions
Boston’s Odds To Repeat
The Celtics still have the best chance to contend in the 2024 campaign, per FanDuel. Their odds are currently +300 as of September 10th2024. The Oklahoma City Thunder have the second best odds at +700 followed by the Philadelphia 76ers and the New York Knicks both at +900 odds. The Denver Nuggets and Dallas Mavericks are tied for the fourth-best odds at +1,100. Overall, the Celtics still have the best roster in the current NBA coached by one of the smartest minds in Joe Mazzella.
With minimal roster changes and plenty of talent knowing their roles, one shouldn’t be surprised if the Celtics make a repeat run to the NBA Finals next summer. Jaylen Brown showed he can be a true leader this past season and Jayson Tatum is still a top 10 player in the league. Not to mention, guys like Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday know what it takes to win at the highest level. Given all of this, Joe Mazzella and his team will continue to be a threat throughout the league.
