Jose Benavidez Sr continues to accuse Canelo of misleading the fight against David Benavidez
CANELO ALVAREZ is considered one of the best boxers of the present time but his decision not to fight David Benavidez continues to be questioned.
Three months ago, the 34-year-old turned 61St won 65 fights over fellow Mexican Jaime Munguia on points to retain his undisputed super-middleweight title. Next month at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Canelo will face Puerto Rico’s Edgar Berlanga in a fight that he is expected to win convincingly.
Despite being stripped of the IBF title Alvarez is still dominant at 168lbs. Benavidez was seen as the heir to the throne before moving to light-heavyweight. The 27-year-old made his successful debut at 175lbs defeating Oleksandr Gvozdyk in June. And while Canelo and Benavidez have been linked to fighting each other, the possibility of it happening has always been unlikely.
One man in the running is former wBA super-welterweight champion Terence Crawford. The American won the title on Saturday night defeating Israel Madrimov on points. Benavidez’s father Jose Benavidez Sr watched at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles and spoke to him. Debate News after that.
“Well, you know, it was a good fight,” he said. “There wasn’t much to do because they both had a lot of experience. At the end of the day, Terence Crawford got the job done.
When asked if Canelo avoids fighting his son, he replied: “Of course. He is asking for $200 million. That tells you he’s avoiding David Benavidez.”
Benavidez Sr then gave an update on when we might see the WBC Interim light-heavyweight title holder back in the ring.
“We are working to see maybe in November, we will get him another fight. We will keep him busy and fight Benavidez once [Dmitry] Bivol.”
