Kane reflects on humble beginnings after an unforgettable night in England

Harry Kane says he never thought he would win 100 England caps while on loan at Millwall, Norwich and Leicester.

Tottenham and the Three Lions’ all-time top goalscorer came from humble beginnings, starting at Leyton Orient before several loan spells at Spurs.

Fast forward 12 years and the 31-year-old has just become his country’s centurion.

In true Kane fashion, he marked the occasion with two goals and had a smile on his face as he showed off his gold cap, along with 67 and 68 goals for England.

Speaking after the 2-0 win over Finland in the UEFA Nations League, he said: “I don’t think I was thinking of 100 games when I was on loan at Millwall, Norwich and Leicester.

“At that time it was going back to the Spurs team. I have always believed in myself well. I have learned a lot over the years with Mauricio [Pochettino] during his time at Spurs.

“I always support myself to score goals”

“The game is slowly improving and it’s good for me to keep learning. Of course I would be proud If I knew I would get 100 caps.

“It was a big night for me, I’m really proud. I want to score goals and help the team.

“Whenever you’re in doubt, it makes you more hungry to prove people wrong. I’m always pushing myself to score goals and I’m excited for the future.

“Trent backed it up with another good game. We always looked like a team that would break the deadlock.

“We talked about being ruthless but in these games you have to keep knocking on the door and you will get your reward.

“The manager came with a lot of energy, he talks a lot about freedom and attacking and hurting teams.

“Yes, there is room for improvement, but it’s a good start for him.”

Carsley on the way

While most eyes were on Kane at Wembley, most of the attention remained on Lee Carsley as he took charge of his second game as interim England manager.

It was another win and another clean sheet for the former Under-21 boss, meaning the Three Lions scored four but didn’t concede a single one.

Kane has played a key role in maintaining the nation’s top flight under Carsley, and the coach has paid tribute to the striker.

Regarding Kane, he said: “The way he trains and behaves. His finish as you can imagine is very good, even in training. It is not surprising if he scores goals in matches as his habits are good.

“He is a good example for other players. He is the first in every training, he leads by example.

“His game is already adapting as he gets deeper. When Harry is in the team it is important that we have a lot of speed around him.”

On his performance in England so far, Carsley added: “As you can imagine it’s a test. Not only me, but all the other employees.

“We have shown that we can do it and we can do what we are trying to do. We can give feedback and the players respond very well to what we ask.

“The game was good and very exciting. We talked about the spells they can have with the counter attack and make sure we are better positioned for that change.

“It’s been a solid camp, it’s fair to say that the good work that’s been done before and we’ve tried to build on that.

“I’m still not comfortable, I’ve been out of my comfort zone for a long time. It’s exciting but we have to make sure that every day we produce high standards.

“I’m lucky to get two good results and build on that.”
