Kieran Trippier resigns from England job

Kieran Trippier has retired from international football after winning 54 caps for England.

The Newcastle defender made the announcement on Instagram this morning, hours before interim manager Lee Carsley named his squad to face the Republic of Ireland and Finland at the Nations.

He wrote: “I never thought as a Bury boy that I would play for my country let alone get 54 caps.

“It was one of the biggest awards in my life to represent my country in 4 major tournaments.

“I want to say a big thank you to Gareth [Southgate] and all the staff who have worked with the England team for the trust they have placed in me over the years.

“Thank you to all my teammates – we had some very special moments reaching the finals of 2 Euros, and the semi finals of the World Cup and I am sure that next time this group of players will win a big tournament.

“I want to wish Lee, the coaching staff and the team all the best for the future.

“And finally a big thank you to all the England fans for your amazing support who travel all over the world to support us and keep us going through the tough times.”

The 33-year-old made his England debut in 2017 against France in Paris and was a key member of the side that reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in Russia 12 months later.

He gave the Three Lions the lead in the last four against Croatia with a stunning free-kick only for Southgate’s men to exit the contest 2-1 after extra time.

He played sparingly in the delayed 2021 European Championship but started the final against Italy, a game which England lost on penalties.

And Trippier was a member of the squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and the final of Euro 2024 in Germany.

There were suggestions that he wanted to leave Newcastle before the transfer window closed tomorrow night but they were shot down by Magpies manager Eddie Howe.
