Kieran Trippier has revealed that he came close to joining Manchester United in the 2021 summer transfer window, but the move “fell through” before he could end up at Newcastle United.
The right-back was coming off the back of a fine Euro 2020 campaign with England where he played a key role in the Three Lions’ run to the final.
At this time, Trippier was about to enter his third season with Atletico Madrid, but he was eager to return to England and had an offer to join United.
However, the move fell through and he stayed at Atletico for a few more months before signing for Newcastle in January 2022.
Trippier, speaking Overlapbrought to you by Sky Bet, he said: “When I was at Madrid, the season before I left was a difficult year for me for many reasons. I just wanted to go back to England, my family was finding it difficult in England. time.
“I could have stayed at Atletico Madrid, I would have signed a new three-year contract. [Diego] Simeone in the parking lot the day I left didn’t want me to go but it was the right thing at the right time for my family.
“As players you have to be realistic about where you can go. I knew I wasn’t going to sign for Manchester City or Liverpool, I knew I was only tied to certain clubs.
“United have arrived [in for me] directly after the Euro and that was very close. I grew up in my family, but it didn’t happen. Everything happens for a reason.”
When asked why his move to United fell through, Trippier said: “It just fell through. Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] I was the manager at the time and everything seemed fine, I was shocked, it was Manchester United, the biggest club in the world.
“It didn’t happen, I went back to Madrid, and after six months I was in Newcastle. Everyone raised their eyebrows, it’s obvious that people said he was going for money, he’s going this way and that. [staying] in Madrid. I didn’t have a relegation clause, even in the position I was in, I trusted the manager, which is the main reason why I came.”
Trippier has played 92 times for Newcastle since joining the club, helping them to become European rivals as he joined them struggling against defeat.
