King Collazo survived an early scare to defeat Zapata
RESULT: Oscar Collazo defeated Gerardo Zapata by unanimous decision. Boxing at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York, Collazo successfully defended his WBO title at 105 pounds. The judges gave the winner a score of 117-110 and a few decisions 119-109..
IMPORTANT TIMES: Things were looking good for Collazo before he fell defenseless in the second round with a nasty right hand. Zapata raged him around the ring, going around with body shots until time expired. It was a little too much to control Collazo.
RECORDS: Collazo improves to 10-0 (7 KOs), while Gerardo Zapata drops to 14-2-1 (5 KOs).
TALKING POINTS: Taking place at Turning Stone as part of the Hall-of-Fame weekend and Puerto Rican showpiece celebrations, a jubilant Collazo was defending his WBO title for the third time.
Boxing juniors are often the tastes of boxing that are earned and the financial rewards are not that expensive for a strawweight.
Collazo eats this habit and can hit hard despite his size. Zapata also played a little bit more than playing his part in 12 solid sessions.
QUOTABLE: “He hit me with a good shot, he landed it well, I reacted well, I changed the plan of the game and added a punch,” explained Collazo in the blip of the second round.
“I want any champion: CP, Shigeoka, Jerusalem, we can run it back. We will stay in training camp, rest a little bit and get stronger.”
Collazo was arrested in front of one of his mentors, Puerto Rican legend Ivan Calderon, who was on the sidelines before his IBHOF induction.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT: The challenge has proven to be fruitful for Collazo, and there is no doubt that he will look to other champions for unification fights.
As the champion said in his interview after the fight, Japan’s Ginjiro Shigeoka is the king of the IBF, while Collazo has beaten Melvin Jerusalem who holds the WBC title.
Reigning WBA champion Thammanoon Niyomtrong of Thailand, known as Knockout CP Freshmart, has not fought in nearly two years. He has to defend his belt against the Olympic gold medalist Hasanboy Dusmatov, but the fund bids and financial discussions of that outbreak have been popular for a long time.
