The second overall pick from the 2020 NHL Draft had a very productive 2023-24 season. Byfield has played in all of the Kings’ last 80 games, setting a career-high in games played. He recorded 55 points (20 goals and 35 assists), a career high for a 21-year-old.
Byfield also scored six goals, 14 assists, and four goals in the Kings’ win last season.
NHL Rumors: Should Players Be Eligible for Extensions and Sign Right Away?
It took Quinton Byfield some time to develop in the NHL. He was drafted during the COVID-19 crisis and lost playing time that was crucial to his development as a player. But this is an excellent contract for a second baseman for the Kings, as Pierre-Luc Dubois is in Washington.
With the mid-term deal, Byfield can now cash in on a long-term extension with the Kings as the salary increases. This agreement saves the Kings money in the short term.
#KINGS sign Quinton Byfield: 5 years x $6.25 million.
Byfield gets $31.25 million in security, and a mid-term deal to make big money in the future. An interesting deal for both parties. Eight years would be too expensive.

The Los Angeles Kings re-signed Quinton Byfield to a five-year extension with an AAV of $6.25M. That is the best value in Los Angeles in my eyes. However, Byfield could be a UFA as early as age 26. pic.twitter.com/OZNVEkdTuY
