Kosei Tanaka WBO Title Defense Canceled After Jonathan Rodriguez Drops Weight

Saturday’s tripleheader is now down to two title fights and an interim matchup.

Kosei Tanaka will not continue to defend his WBO flyweight title against Mexico’s Jonathan Rodriguez. The promotion is not the fault of Tanaka (20-1, 11 knockouts), who made weight for their scheduled 12-round belt. Rodriguez (25-2-1, 17 KOs) was woefully over the 115-pound limit, nearly seven pounds overweight.

The differences were deemed inappropriate for the comparison to proceed in the present manner.

Mexico’s Jonathan Rodriguez (25-2-1, 17 knockouts) won his WBO 115-pound title after losing more than six pounds. His fight against defending champion Kosei Tanaka (20-1, 11 KOs), scheduled for July 20, has been canceled. Photo credit: Naoki Fukuda

“The match is cancelled,” revealed Tanaka, The Ring’s No. 4-rated junior bantamweight. “[Rodriguez] he was 2.9kg over the limit and stopped re-weighing. Considering the opponent’s physical condition and the fact that a fight declared invalid is not a good thing, the decision to cancel the match was made.

“Tomorrow I will appear in the ring with a microphone instead of gloves. We apologize for the bad news.”

Rodriguez may face disciplinary action by the Japan Boxing Commission (JBC) for no nonsense.

The other two title fights on the show remain the same.

Junto Nakatani (27-0, 20 knockouts), No. 10 pound-for-pound defense of his WBC 118-pound title against Vincent Astrolabio of the Philippines (19-4, 14 KOs). Nakatani is The Ring’s No. 1-rated bantamweight; Astrolabio is number 7 and comes in as Nakatani’s mandatory challenger.

Riku Kano (22-4-2, 11 KOs) and Anthony Olascuaga (6-1, 4 KOs) meet for the vacant WBO flyweight title.

Tenshin Nasukawa (3-0, 1 KO) meets Puerto Rico’s Jonathan Rodriguez (17-2-1, 7 KOs). The win is expected to push Nasukawa, the most popular kickboxing star, closer to the top of his boxing career.

All three games will air live on ESPN+, starting at 5:00 am ET/2:00 am PT.
