LAFC will hire Neil McGuinness as Technical Director

Los Angeles FC is set to appoint Columbus Crew director Neil McGuinness as the club’s chief technical officer, reports Tom Bogert of The Athletic.

According to Bogert, McGuinness will work under chief football officer and co-president John Thorrington. McGuinness has reportedly beaten Newcastle United’s assistant head of first-team recruitment Andy Howe for the role.

McGuinness has been with Columbus Crew since 2019 after leaving Celtic. The Crew’s team was restructured during the time when the team won two MLS Cups in 2020 and 2023. Columbus also made it to the finals of the Concacaf Champions Cup, beating Monterrey of Liga MX 5-2 on aggregate. If the Columbus Crew lifts the trophy, it will be the second MLS team to win the trophy in the current era.

Cucho Hernandez, Lucas Zelarayn and Diego Rossi are just a few names that have played a major role in the Crew’s success over the past two years.

LAFC are expected to have a busy summer transfer window with Olivier Giroud expected to lead the list of signings. The team is currently in seventh place in the Western Conference having won only four of their first 11 games. LAFC won their first MLS title back in 2022, but failed to repeat with a 2-1 loss to the Crew.

McGuinness fills the shoes left by Will Kuntz who joined the LA Galaxy at the end of last year.
