In a move that shocked the NBA world, the Lakers tapped UConn coach Dan Hurley as the franchise’s next coach.
Hurley will meet with the Lakers on Friday in California, who want to lock him down to a long-term deal – multiple sources are reporting.
Of course, LA needs to think about how this will affect the most important person on the roster – LeBron James.
But, LeBron reportedly wants the new coaching decision to be less about him, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reports.
“When this process started with the Lakers when they fired Darvin Ham, it’s obvious that they talked to LeBron about the coaching situation,” said Brian Windhorst. First Take. “From what I understand, LeBron didn’t say to them, ‘You’ve got to hire someone more than just me. I might be here another year. I might be here for two years. You have to make a decision built around Anthony Davis. That’s built on what the Lakers need for the next decade, not just what I need.’
“Of course, his feelings about the head coach will be considered, but that is the message LeBron gave them. This type of recruitment, this type of attendance for this type of candidate, coincides with that.
“Secondly, LeBron praised Dan Hurley and his skills recently in public, especially after this podcast he did with JJ Redick,” Windhorst continued. “It’s so weird that you just did a podcast after that [Hurley] won the national title for the second time in a row. JJ talking about X’s and O’s, talking about where he got his wisdom from, talking about how he conducts himself as a coach. And I think that will be well received by LeBron. “
One thing is for sure, whoever the Lakers decide to hire, they will have a very long career ahead of them.
