Liverpool have confirmed the names of the first three coaches to join Arne Slot’s backroom following his arrival at the club from Feyenoord.
It wasn’t just Jurgen Klopp who left Anfield last month, ending a chapter in the club’s history and seeing the departure of long-term assistant manager Pep Lijnders and elite development coach Vitor Matos also moving on. Both men will start next season with Red Bull Salzburg, where Lijnders has been replaced by Matos as his assistant.
Goalkeeper coach John Achterberg also decided to move forward.
Joining Slot in the new coaching unit is Sipke Hulshoff, who had worked with the 45-year-old at former club Feyenoord since 2022 and was known to him before that. He was also Ronald Koeman’s assistant in the Netherlands national team until he stepped down recently.
Ruben Peeters joins Liverpool as head coach of physical play, also from Feyenoord, while Fabian Otte has been named goalkeeping coach for the first team of the United States national team. Otte has previously worked in England, having been assistant goalkeeping coach with Burnley, before joining Borussia Monchengladbach in Germany.
“Yes, you want to go with other people because they know who you are, they know how you play and they can translate to other staff. But when you go to a team like Liverpool, you can think – and I’ve seen that – that there are a lot of good people working here,” said Slot. LiverpoolFC.com.
“We hope to use the best of both worlds to do a few things for us and use the knowledge within this club because of the nine years Jurgen and his staff have worked here.”
Slot added that he remains in contact with Liverpool’s new sporting director Richard Hughes, with “one or two” other coaching positions still to be filled.
