Liverpool suffered a major injury blow as the midfielder broke his foot

Liverpool will be without midfielder Harvey Elliott for several weeks after breaking his foot in training.

Elliott had to withdraw from England’s Under-21 squad for September’s internationals due to complaints of ‘discomfort’.

The Times reports that after a medical, Liverpool have confirmed that Elliott has been sidelined.

The broken foot means Elliott will miss seven games in the three weeks before the October international break, while there is no guarantee he will be able to return immediately after that window.

Elliott was one of Arne Slot’s best performers in pre-season, but has only played seven minutes of football so far this season, with the Dutchman favored by a midfield trio of Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

The Times adding that Elliott, in his sixth season at Anfield, is now considered more of an attacking midfielder than a winger after bringing in Federico Chiesa from Juventus just before the summer transfer deadline. The Italian is yet to make his debut and has been building fitness after being sacked by Juve in the summer.

Mac Allister picked up an adductor injury while away with Argentina last week, although Slot will be boosted by the return of Curtis Jones following a hamstring problem.

Liverpool return to Premier League action on Saturday at home to Nottingham Forest, before kicking off their UEFA Champions League campaign away to seven-time winners AC Milan on Tuesday.
