Liverpool’s move for Anthony Gordon is ‘falling apart’ due to refusal to agree a transfer deal

Liverpool pulled out of a deal to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United as they were reluctant to send Jarell Quansah to them as part of the deal, according to a report.

Newcastle need to sell players to comply with the Premier League’s Profit & Sustainability Rules. The deadline for the 2023-24 financial term is 30 June, although it is said that this is not a hard deadline and deals completed in the following days may still count towards this period.

Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak have both been heavily linked with an exit as the Magpies look for much-needed cash to avoid fines, and now Gordon is on the market.

I Daily Mail reports that Newcastle have held talks with Liverpool this week over Gordon’s sale, and were ready to give the green light to the winger’s move to Anfield.

However, the deal fell apart when Newcastle asked for Quansah to be used as a makeweight in the deal, but the Reds were reluctant to lose the young defender and pulled out of the talks.

Quansah, who turned 21 in January, is coming off the back of a fine campaign for Liverpool, netting 33 times last season. He was named in England’s provisional squad for Euro 2024 but did not make it to the finals.

Although Liverpool have not done anything for Gordon other than the inclusion of Quansah, negotiations will continue at the weekend.

Gordon is also attracting interest from Paris Saint-Germain, who are in the hunt for a replacement for Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe.

Had the Liverpool deal gone through this week, Gordon would have been on trial in Germany near England’s Euro 2024 training camp. The Three Lions face Slovakia in the last 16 on Sunday and there have been increasing calls for the 23-year-old to start.

Gordon signed for Newcastle from Liverpool’s rivals Everton in January 2023 for £45m. After a slow start on Tyneside, he has become a fan favorite and one of their team’s best players.
