London Golf Club hosts G4D Shield – Golf News
London Golf Club celebrated a fantastic few days of golf after some of the best golfers with disabilities descended on the Kent area to compete in the London Golf Club G4D Shield.
Held from August 6-8, the EDGA event – the first to be held at London Golf Club since 2021 – saw a field of 30 golfers from six countries compete over 36 holes on the prestigious International Course.
Following an excellent opening round of four-under 68, Issa Nlareb’s second round of the night was enough in difficult conditions to finish one shot ahead of runner-up Jack McCrindle, and four strokes ahead of all other players.
Ben Stimson, director of golf at London Golf Club, said: “It was an honor to host the London Golf Club G4D shield on our International Course. The event was a humbling experience for the whole team, and we saw some great golf from some extremely talented people.
“It was amazing to watch and see how people with disabilities were able to navigate a round of golf with such dedication and determination. Congratulations to Issa Nlareb, and we look forward to welcoming the EDGA Tour back to London Golf Club in 2025.”
The first Cameroonian to ever play in the US Adaptive Open, Nlareb contracted bacterial meningitis while competing in the Ein Bay Open of the Alps Tour in Egypt. The diagnosis of the disease led to the amputation of both legs and several fingers.
Speaking after the victory, Nlareb said: “It was my privilege to play in England and this beautiful golf course. I love playing this type of course and I am grateful to the London Golf Club team because it is not easy to keep it in this condition. I also want to thank EDGA, the sponsors and my wife Francesca.”
PARTICIPATION AND ACCESS
As part of the build-up to the event, the club and the EDGA – an organization that works with 50 national golf associations to deliver opportunities to sample, participate and compete in the game of golf – promoted inclusion and accessibility for disabled golfers across Kent. region.
Coaching has been provided by the EDGA team to London Golf Club PGA Professional Paul Stuart to ensure the club is fully educated and capable of offering lessons to disabled golfers, and free golf lessons are made available to local children and disabled adults.
The EDGA team also worked closely with London Golf Club staff across the golf course and wider facility to help identify all opportunities to improve the guest experience and reach new customers across the disability spectrum.
Dr Tony Bennett, President of the EDGA, said: “When London Golf Club agreed to host an EDGA Tour event it was like a good match. The entire team at this innovative and welcoming club were very easy to work with throughout the planning process, right up to delivering the London Golf Club G4D Shield.
“We were aiming for 30 players for this first event and we know that most of the golfers who clearly enjoyed their experience will now be spreading the quality of the field and the warmth of their welcome. I expect that securing a place at the 2025 event will be highly coveted by many G4D players.”
