Oscar Robertson is a revered legend of the game, but Lou Williams remembers a time he gave a Raptors pep talk that turned sour.
“This is like the beginning of the season and it’s usually, you know, bringing in like, a motivational speaker or somebody,” Williams said. The Underground Lounge. “So Oscar Robertson – he was the speaker. And the talk was going well. We were engaged, we were arguing and then my brother turned on the switch. He just started hating us. And the only thing I remember [he] he said something about Shaq like ‘Shaq couldn’t hold Wilt Chamberlain’s bag’. So, for the first time, you hear the room rumbling. So, we try to keep it respectable, af**king legend like Oscar Robertson up there when he talks to us. But, we see now that he is no longer on our side. We started looking at each other like ‘What the f*** just happened?’ Like, he doesn’t like us at all. And then he said ‘Chris Paul couldn’t be in the same gym as Bob Cousy.’ We lost.”
During Williams’ short time with the Raptors, he won his first Sixth Man of the Year award after averaging 15.5 points and 2.1 assists in 25 minutes per game during the 2014-15 season.
Ironically, Toronto did not bring Williams back the following year and he signed with the Los Angeles Lakers and in the same podcast, he explained why.
“The word was that they didn’t sign me back to Toronto because of my lifestyle,” said Williams. “They say that I have a bad influence and they just say that my spirit is not compatible with what they are building there. Have you ever heard that?”
Williams thinks the song Drake released in 2015 was expensive 6 A person influenced the Raptors’ decision.
“Drake,” she said. “It was a hit, a thousand percent.”
