MacGregor 2024 instruments are the result of years of development
The new MacGregor 2024 instruments have dropped during the usually quiet period of release.
However, this grade could be a lesson to other golf brands in terms of correcting it by removing it.
Some January releases can feel rushed with clubs that have been released more often than previous iterations of the line or another club in their lineup.
The MacGregor 2024 irons slot into many of the existing iron categories, and they all fit into what you might call a reasonable price point, at least when it comes to a direct-to-consumer product.
MacGregor MACSPD
The new MacGregor MACSPD irons are hollow, foam-filled irons in the player grade with some forgiveness features added to the package.
This does not act as a replacement for the MT86 grade irons manufactured by MacGregor.
Simon Millington, who revived the MacGregor brand, points out that the MACSPDs are aimed at a wider market than the MT86s.
“There are similarities to the MT86 irons, but this one has a slightly wider one and is a little more forgiving,” Milington told MyGolfSpy.
“It’s also more competitively priced than the MT86, which is something we’re trying to do with new materials.”
MACSPDs look similar to clubs with a similar target market, but the design is an original one developed by Millington and Callaway/Odyssey designer Larry Tang.
“I wouldn’t say it’s a game-changing design,” said Millington.
“Larry had ideas so we took my original idea and tweaked it. So I give myself more credit.”
MacGregor MT Milled and MT-Pro Irons
There isn’t much in the way of nods to history and tradition when it comes to MT Milled and MT-Pro Irons.
“We wanted them to look very clean,” Milington continued.
“We want product excellence and we’re trying to make things better and better.”
Both steel sets are forgings made from a single piece of carbon steel 1020. MT Milled is a fully CNC machined player spacer.
The MT-Pro has a prominent horizontal back channel and most of the weight is low in the back, which lowers the CG and helps with the limited forgiveness, making it easier to lift the ball in the air. However, MT Milled is the most forgiving of the two clubs.
The re-introduction of the MacGregor brand has been careful and thought out, and Millington seems to have held firmly to their understanding.
“We’re trying to do better than accepting what you get in any industry,” he said.
“Part of the real design is what you see but a big part is what’s under the hood.”
