Man City have completed the signing of Japanese star Aoba Fujino
Manchester City have completed the signing of Aoba Fujino, one of Japan’s up-and-coming players.
The 20-year-old striker joins the Manchester club on a three-year contract until 2027 from WE League club Tokyo Verdy Beeleza, where he has spent his entire senior career to date. Fujino was a breakout star at the 2023 Women’s World Cup and became Japan’s youngest goalscorer in the tournament with a goal against Costa Rica in the group stage.
He is representing his country at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris this summer and Japan made a good start to the tournament, advancing to the knockout stage. Fujino was once again a standout player, scoring against Spain in their first group game.
Fujino believes that the Women’s Super League is the perfect place to continue to develop, as he told the club’s website: “In the league, this is a club at the highest level physically and technically. That’s what I find most attractive, the size of the team and the organization. It’s very important to play in this place where I can improve myself, focus in speed and quick decision-making.
He will join Yui Hasegawa, who has been a constant presence in the City team since he arrived at the club two years ago.
“He said the club is very good,” continued Fujino. “The way they play by building up each other in games, even when you are facing other football teams, even if you are not physically fit, we have a very good strategy to be able to surpass other clubs.
“And again, you said that the players are very nice and kind, so this is a very good thing!”
City manager Charlotte O’Neill added: “Aoba is a fantastic striker and his signing shows our desire and intention to challenge for silverware when he plays for City. He will be a great addition to the team.
Manager Taylor also said: “Aoba brings more excitement and a level of professionalism to the team. He is young, but he has established himself at international level and we are delighted to bring him to our club.”
