Man Utd add set-piece specialist to Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff

Manchester United have announced the appointment of Andreas Georgson as their new first team coach.

The 42-year-old left his position as manager of Norwegian club Lillestrom to become the new face of Erik ten Hag’s staff.

United have been busy overhauling their coaching system this summer, with assistant manager Mitchell van der Gaag and head coach Benni McCarthy leaving the club. Legendary striker Ruud van Nistelrooy and fellow Dutchman Rene Hake, both of whom have significant managerial experience, have been appointed as first-team coaches at Old Trafford.

Jelle ten Rouwelaar has joined United as their new goalkeeping coach, while Georgson is the fourth new member of the Ten Hag squad, with his appointment confirmed on Friday evening.

Georgson enjoyed a low-profile playing career in his native Sweden before being appointed assistant manager of Malmo in 2018.

After one year in this role, he moved to England and became part of Thomas Frank’s coaching staff at Brentford. His installation of set pieces quickly caught the attention of Arsenal, who jumped on board for Mikel Arteta’s 2020 set-up.

Georgson left Arsenal in 2021 and returned to Malmo in various technical and managerial roles, while returning to the club as interim manager in 2022. He returned to England as a team coach in the summer of 2023 at Southampton – appointed by new United technical director Jason Wilcox – but left after a few months to take up a managerial role at Lillestrom.

United’s weakness at set-pieces was underlined by conceding 14 times in the Premier League last season – with only five teams finishing the campaign with a worse record.

Georgson’s expertise may be patchy but United have yet to confirm that he will be given the job of overseeing that area alone.
