Man Utd are ‘working to finalise’ a deal to sign the £34m striker

Manchester United are keen to sign Joshua Zirkzee, with reports saying they are ‘working to complete’ a deal.

The Red Devils are searching for a striker in this transfer window, and Rasmus Hojlund is now their only option to be the main player after the end of Anthony Martial’s contract.

90 min he revealed in January that United were among the clubs interested in Zirkzee, who at the time was in the midst of an impressive campaign for Bologna that ended with them qualifying for the Champions League.

Since then, United have stepped up their interest and rivaled AC Milan for the Dutchman. Although he initially appeared to be heading for the San Siro, the saga has taken another turn and a move to Old Trafford looks likely.

David Ornstein of Athletic reports that a deal to take 23-year-old Zirkzee to United is close. The club reached an agreement on personal terms and a hefty agent fee – factors that have slowed Milan’s pursuit.

United have the option to simply exercise the £34m release clause in Zirkzee’s contract, although due to a ‘cash flow problem’, they are considering whether to approach Bologna with an offer with a more favorable payment structure.

Zirkzee is currently at Euro 2024 with the Netherlands, although he was called up late due to injury problems in Ronald Koeman’s squad and cut short his holiday to join the team. Oranje will face England in the semi-finals on Wednesday.

There have been calls for Zirkzee, who has only played three minutes in this Euro, to start for the Netherlands as current starting striker Memphis Depay is out of form. Wout Weghorst, who joined United on loan in 2023, was often Koeman’s first choice off the bench.
