Man Utd confirm Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui’s shirt numbers

Manchester United have given new players Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui team numbers following their switch from Bayern Munich.

The pair were confirmed as new Red Devils players on Tuesday night, with both praising former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag as part of their reasons for moving to Old Trafford.

De Ligt and Mazraoui could make their debuts on Friday night when United host Fulham in the Premier League’s opening game of the season, and the club have already confirmed their new squad numbers.

De Ligt will once again wear the number 4, which was his favorite number throughout spells at Ajax, Juventus and then Bayern.

The number 4 was released this summer following Sofyan Amrabat’s return to Fiorentina at the end of his loan spell. United are said to be discussing a new move for the Moroccan midfielder as they have not activated a buyout option in the deal.

Before that, Phil Jones wore the number 4 for his 11 years at United, and it was previously worn by the likes of Owen Hargreaves and Juan Sebastian Veron.

Mazraoui was given the number 3, which had not been used since 2021 when Eric Bailly left the club. Luke Shaw wore the number 3 in his first season at United, with Patrice Evra and Phil Neville among the most notable occupants over the years.

United have now made four signings in the summer transfer window, with Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro arriving ahead of De Ligt and Mazraoui.

They are still in the market for a midfielder and have held talks with Paris Saint-Germain over Manuel Ugarte. 90 min understands that free agent Adrien Rabiot could be interested in joining the Red Devils, who have a historic interest in the France international.
