Manchester United have finally agreed a compensation deal with Newcastle United to hire Dan Ashworth as the club’s new sporting director.
Ashworth has been on gardening leave at Newcastle for more than four months after expressing a desire to join United, but the two clubs find themselves locked in a protracted financial battle.
Reports suggest that Newcastle wanted around £20m to release Ashworth from his contract, while United were initially below that figure, and it is believed that United were willing to fund a legal battle from Ashworth to try and force a deal.

Ashworth is expected to start work immediately at United as the new sporting director, working alongside technical director Jason Wilcox.
Ashworth will be given overall recruitment and operational responsibility, while Wilcox will report to the former Brighton & Hove Albion and Football Association chief executive.
Chief executive Omar Berrada will officially join United on July 13 when his contract with rivals Manchester City expires.
