Man Utd, Real Madrid and PSG failed to make a summer move for the Tottenham star

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly rejected summer inquiries from Manchester United, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain for vice-captain Cristian Romero.

The defender is in his fourth year with Spurs, and despite being criticized for disciplinary issues on the pitch, he remains one of their most consistent players.

Romero’s world-class performance with Argentina, especially during their 2022 World Cup triumph, has led to the likes of Lionel Messi hailing him as the best defender in the world.

TyC Sports Journalist Gaston Edul says Romero was linked with United, Madrid and PSG in the summer, with all three asking Tottenham about his availability.

However, Spurs have pushed back on these approaches and refused to even tag the 26-year-old, such is his importance to head coach Ange Postecoglou.

Romero is close friends with fellow Argentine Lisandro Martinez, whose club United brought in two new defenders in the summer – Lille’s Leny Yoro and Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt.

Madrid have focused their summer efforts on the free signing of Kylian Mbappe, while also swooping in for Brazilian striker Endrick. A long-term injury to David Alaba and the departure of captain Nacho Fernandez meant the European champions were targeting defensive reinforcements, with Al Nassr’s Aymeric Laporte heavily linked, but did not add another defender to their ranks.

PSG have continued their recruitment drive with a focus on bringing in the most powerful young superstars. Unlike Madrid, they signed a new defender regardless of their interest in Romero, welcoming 22-year-old Willian Pacho through the doors of the Parc des Princes from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Romero is one of three natural defenders on the books at Tottenham alongside Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin, both signed last year. Left back Ben Davies can also play in the middle.
