Match Preview – IND vs IRE 8th Match, Group A, T20 World Cup

Game details

India vs Ireland
New York, 10.30am local time

Big picture – India in their part?

India played two high quality matches in the last T20 World Cup. They won when the field was difficult to hit and lost when it was very easy. They will appreciate that the events of this tournament are proving to be more difficult than expected. That means they won’t be eliminated by a team with a better pedigree of six hits, as was the case in 2016 and 2022.

Less than peaceful conditions also bring Ireland into the game. Josh Little will be asked to do what other left-arm quicks have done against India in the past. Bowl full and try to get lbws and bowled, which if he can do that will be double help, because India is top in this world cup. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav – their top three batsmen – are likely to be Nos. 1, 2 and 3. Getting them out early may be half the job done.

It’s early days, but so far, aggressive behavior seems to be the key to victory in this elusive T20 World Cup. So watch Jasprit Bumrah hold his height back and prioritize untouchability first. And for Paul Stirling to answer the calculated risks of extending the powerplay. Kuldeep Yadav will make full use of his improved air speed by not giving up on the stumps. All of Ireland – especially the middle order of Harry Tector and Curtis Camper – will have to work together to keep him wickets. It will be difficult but that is what they want. Ireland lives for games like these, at times like these.

In the scene – Rishabh Pant and Harry Tector

Just wearing a sweater made him ugly. Imagine how it would feel there Rishabh Pant coming out to hit. Even without it, that’s the first step to getting back on the pitch for India in an official World Cup game at least. He might be in the headlines. Or he won’t. But the fact that he is back and able to play cricket at this level again after that car accident less than two years ago is huge. The game is lucky to still have him and his sixth appearance.

Harry Tector he made his highest T20I score against India, a blistering 64 off 33 balls, though that was against a second-string attack. Rather recently, he faced Rashid Khan and Afghanistan with 56 off 34 balls and helped them to a score that finally seemed beyond the defense. The middle-order batsman shines with his power and attitude and this T20 world cup might be his moment.

Team news: Dube possible, Jaiswal unlikely

Left-handed batting at the top of the order is a useful asset and in Yashasvi Jaiswal India have one of the best, but they may give that up in favor of another left-handed batsman with very different skills. Shivam Dube is likely to come into the middle and take the spinners. India’s bowling consists of a lot of variety but it centers on Bumrah and Kuldeep, players whose talent can dominate entire tournaments, let alone single matches.

India (probable): 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Virat Kohli, 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Shivam Dube, 5 Rishabh Pant (wk), 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Kuldeep Yadav, 9 Arshdeep Singh, 10, Jasprit Bumrah 11 Mohammed Siraj

Ireland’s batting goes down to No. 8 and there is a reasonable separation between the power hitters and the shock absorbers. Andy Balbirnie and Lorcan Tucker have the potential to play both of those roles. Their bowling is full of seam but left-arm bowler George Dockrell can get an over or two against more orthodox batsmen in the Indian line-up.

Ireland (probable): 1 Andy Balbirnie, Paul Stirling (capt), 3 Lorcan Tucker (wk), 4 Harry Tector, 5 Curtis Campher, 6 George Dockrell, 7 Gareth Delany, 8 Mark Adair, 9 Barry McCarthy, 10 Craig Young, 11 Ben White

Tone and context: Mysterious

New York weather is perfect for cricket. Not too hot, not too cold, not worried about dew. The field and pitch, however, will be under the scanner again after events from Monday, when 80 for 4 in 16.2 overs played for 77 all out. But things can only get better. India played a warm-up match here, on a different track, and scored 180.
