Match Preview – RR vs PBKS 65th Match, IPL

Game details

Rajasthan Royals vs Punjab Kings
Guwahati, 7.30pm IST (2pm GMT)

Big picture: Who will replace Buttler at RR?

From being well placed to top the points table, Rajasthan Royals are now in danger of dropping out of the top two – or, worse, even relegation – after three consecutive defeats at the end of the tournament. The Royals currently have 16 points, with four more teams to catch up, so they need to win a game or two to ensure a top two finish in the league.

Jos Buttler’s departure to England for the T20 World Cup has made their path to the play-offs difficult. It also remains to be seen if Shimron Hetmyer is fully recovered after missing the Royals’ last two games with an injury. Rovman Powell, who failed to complete the chase for Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad, did not make the team as an Impact Player against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday.

How can the Royals fill a Buttler-sized hole at the top? They could bring Tom Kohler-Cadmore off the bench or shake up the order for Dhruv Jurel. Although Kohler-Cadmore is now used to playing in other T20 leagues around the world, he is yet to play T20 in India. And while Jurel has often opened for Uttar Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy, he has opened the batting just once in T20 cricket.

As for the Punjab Kings, they are no longer in contention for the playoffs and their only motivation now is to avoid the wooden spoon.

Karnataka spinner Vidwath Kaverappa is likely to get another game as the Impact Player, while PBKS is likely to replace him with exceptional batting. Highlights: Riyan Parag and Jitesh Sharma

After scoring a world record fifty in a row for Assam in the 20 overs Syed Mushtaq Ali, Riyan Parag returns to Guwahati for his third game at the IPL venue. After managing just 20 at No.6 against PBKS last season in Guwahati, Parag has the potential to grow even more this time, given his recent form at No.4. He is one century shy of equaling Ruturaj Gaikwad as the second-highest wicket-taker this season, while Virat Kohli is the only top-scorer to reach 600 runs this season so far.

Jitesh Sharma He started the IPL as India’s leading T20 wicket-keeper batsman, but his form dipped so much that he was dropped for the upcoming T20 World Cup. He scored just 133 runs in ten innings at an average of 13.30 and a strike rate of less than 125. His strike rate is the third lowest – behind Sam Curran (116.29) and Ajinkya Rahane (120.11) – among all-time batsmen. at least ten innings in this IPL. Can he correct those numbers and finish this season with a bang?
