Match Report – USA vs IND 25th Match, Group A, June 12, 2024

India 111 for 3 (Suryakumar 50*, Dube 31*, Netravalkar 2-18) scored USA 110 for 8 (Nitish 27, Taylor 24, Arshdeep 4-9, Hardik 2-14) for seven wickets

The USA had many things against them.

Conditions: Before today, they had never played at Nassau County Stadium; this was India’s fourth match at this venue.

Employees: Monank Patel, the designated captain, was injured.

Throwing: Rohit Sharma batted well and asked USA to bat in tight situations.

Experience: A motley crew with day jobs against cricket royalty.

It had everything to make a one-way fare. Except, it wasn’t.

At one point, when Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were both dismissed by Saurabh Netravalkar, and India 15 for 2 in the chase for 111, the USA dared to dream.

When Rishabh Pant was played by Ali Khan, thirty-nine thousand screaming fans, many of them Indian-Americans, gave more wings to those dreams.

This was now the USA’s game to lose.

But in Suryakumar Yadav, India there was a man in dire straits who bailed them out of the raging waters. He helped along with Shivam Dube at the turn of the century which seemed to change.

India are now through to the Super Eights, but the USA are still masters of their future; a win over Ireland, even a wash, would see them through, ahead of Pakistan who they famously beat in a thrilling Super Over last week.

Netravalkar’s time for Gibbs?

Fifty-three are needed in 45.

The USA were bowling cutters on the field. Suryakumar was struggling to hit the ball from the square, and trying to make strokes. Many times, it comes out. Here, that was not the case.

Over after the ball was bowled he tried to sweep Corey Anderson on his length, he tried to open the bat to play his trademark spot up, he just cut the ball up. Saurabh Netravalkar circles under it after doing very well to get to the ball running back from short third, but he can’t hold on to the opportunity.

The hero who couldn’t put a foot wrong until then was human, after all.
