Mauricio Pochettino has been appointed head coach of the USMNT

The United States men’s national team has appointed Mauricio Pochettino as its new coach.

Pochettino returns to work after leaving Chelsea in May and will lead the USMNT to the 2026 FIFA World Cup on home soil.

In a statement, Pochettino said: “The decision to join US Soccer was not just about football for me, but about the journey of this team and this country.

“The energy, passion, and hunger to achieve something historic here – that’s what motivated me. The opportunity to lead the US Men’s National Team, in front of fans as passionate as the players, is something. I couldn’t pass it up, I see a group of players full of talent and skill, and together, we will build something special for the nation we can all be proud of.

U.S. Soccer director of sports Matt Crocker, who led the recruiting process, added: “Mauricio is a series winner with a deep passion for player development and a proven ability to build cohesive and competitive teams.

“His track record speaks for itself, and I am confident that he is the right choice to add to our talented squad. We are delighted to have Mauricio on board as we embark on this exciting journey to achieve global success. .”

Pochettino will replace interim coach Mikey Varas and will take charge of next month’s friendlies against Panama and Mexico.

Before his spell at Chelsea, Pochettino enjoyed successful spells in charge of Espanyol, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain.
