Middleweight debutant Sherif Lawal dies at the age of 29

Tragedy happened yesterday evening (May 12) at Harrow Leisure Center when middleweight Sherif Lawal lost his life.

In the opening bout of the six-round card, the 29-year-old fought Malam Valera.

In the fourth round Lawal was on the canvas after Valera landed a right hand to the temple. Referee Lee Wonke started to count but he saw that Sherif was worried and immediately called off the contest. Trainer CJ Hussein was familiar with his boxer and he was soon joined by a doctor and paramedics from the British Boxing Board. Lawal was given CPR for 10-15 minutes. He was then taken by ambulance to Northwick Park Hospital where he was sadly pronounced dead.

The MC of the night made an announcement that the program is about to be canceled which was appreciated by the crowd including a lot of Albanians who came out quietly after watching light-heavyweight Amarildo Bakaj and cruiserweight Roberto Bakaj.

Lawal had been a strong member of the St Pancras Amateur Boxing Club competing at the highest level in the National Elite competition last year.

In an article last month in the Camden New Journal Hussein described Lawal as “a true inspiration to all young boxers in the gym.”

Everyone at Boxing News would like to express their deepest condolences and sympathies to Sharif’s family and friends.
