Mikel Arteta has insisted he will sit down with Arsenal to discuss his future when “the time is right.”
Arteta will have just one year left on his current contract when the season ends this weekend, and has been at the Emirates since 2019 when he replaced Unai Emery.
The Spaniard has guided the Gunners to the brink of their first Premier League title in 20 years, but they will need to beat Everton at the Emirates and hope Manchester City slip up against West Ham.
Arteta will discuss his future when “the time is right”
The 42-year-old has done an impressive job in north London following his arrival from Manchester City, where he worked as Pep Guardiola’s assistant.
The Gunners had their best season of the season and after finishing second in eighth place, the fifth place club is now a title contender again.
In the build-up to the end of the season against the Toffees Arteta predicted any result would be an emotional day, but when things are ready he will discuss his future with the club.
“That is something that after the season, or whenever the time is right, we will talk and sit down”, Arteta told reporters when asked about the contract talks.
“The important thing is that we win now, we always believe that we can continue to win, that is the important thing.
“Whatever happens, it will be very painful that day [against Everton].
“It is probably not the right time to draw conclusions but after that we will have time to reflect.
“We have to get through this season where we have to get to the point we have made and try to understand why.
“We have to find out the ‘why’ and the ‘how’, we will do the following. That is very important.”
City will be favorites going into the final day, and are on a 22-game unbeaten run, but Arsenal have to believe, and the beauty of football is anything can happen.
