Let’s assume that Marner’s comments were presented in good faith. In retrospect, he might wish to put it another way because it was tone-deaf, given the context. His team had just lost another heartthrob. He had only put up three points in a seven game series where only one of his side could have won the series for his team. Perhaps his reminder to fans of how much they love the team came at the wrong time.

It’s no surprise that Marner’s comments after the game—where he expressed feeling like “kind of a god” in Toronto and thanked the fans for their unparalleled love—were met with critical reaction. On the surface, Marner’s words were likely his sincere attempt to show his appreciation for the support of Maple Leafs fans. However, his words shocked many.
Fans are emotionally and financially invested in the team’s success. They felt disappointed, and Marner was partly to blame. He is one of the highest paid players in this team but he failed, and his performance was closely watched. Fans and the media have started talking about expecting a lot from a player of his caliber, especially at key moments.
If timing is everything, Marner’s statement came at a bad time and seemed cut to the frustration and disappointment of fans. Didn’t he get it? How would the fans feel?
