Mohammad Wasim appointed Pakistan women’s head coach for Asia Cup

Mohammad Wasim, a former Pakistan batsman and senior men’s selector, has been appointed as the head coach of the women’s national team, ahead of the T20 Asia Cup. Junaid Khan and Abdur Rehman, both former bowlers for Pakistan, will be the assistant coach and spin-bowling coach, respectively. No batting coach has been appointed, and it is understood that Wasim will handle it himself.

The PCB statement confirmed that the selection was for the Asia Cup matches only, which will be played in Dambulla from July 19 to 28. It was not yet revealed that the appointment might extend beyond the tournament.

Most of Wasim’s training was with Northern, the side that had been in Pakistan’s domestic squad for four years when the PCB revived the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy at the behest of Imran Khan, then Pakistan’s prime minister and PCB patron.

Wasim led Northern to back-to-back second-place finishes, his side known for bringing in young players. He also won silver in the National T20 Cup, with Northern winning the tournament in 2019-20. Wasim was later appointed chief selector of the men’s team, before he was suddenly sacked when Najam Sethi took over as PCB chairman in December 2022.

In the previous series, Pakistan played under interim coach Mohtashim Rasheed, with former international cricketers Taufeeq Umar and Salim Jaffar serving as batting and bowling coach, respectively.

The T20 Asia Cup comes at a challenging time for the Pakistan team after two tough tours. They won only one T20I out of eight in the West Indies and England, and went winless in the ODI series. Those followed a year in which dry runs were combined with encouraging results, notably a home T20I series against South Africa, as well as becoming the first Asian women’s team to win a T20I series in New Zealand.

The women’s PSL looks like a dim prospect now that the PCB has committed to it, and there were no women’s matches at the exhibition held alongside the 2024 men’s PSL, as was the case in 2023.

Although no squad has been named for the Asia Cup, the PCB has named a 28-member squad for a four-day training camp in Karachi.
