Mumbai Indians have signed a new coach ahead of the IPL 2025 auction
With the important move forward of IPL 2025 mega auctioni Mumbai Indians (MI) they announced the return of Mahela Jayawardene as their coach. The decision comes as part of a major overhaul following a disappointing season in 2024, where the franchise finished at the bottom of the points table with just four wins in 14 games.
The return of the Sri Lankan veteran
Jayawardene, a former Sri Lankan captain and one of the most respected figures in cricket, was the head coach of Mumbai Indians from 2017 to 2022, leading the team to three IPL titles during his tenure. His experience and brilliance will be crucial as Mumbai look to bounce back and reclaim their status as one of the most successful sides in IPL history.
Taking the place of the South African wicketkeeper Mark Boucherwho had been in the party for two years, the appointment of Jayawardene is considered as a step to revive the party. Under his guidance, Mumbai Indians won their titles in 2017, 2019 and 2020, establishing themselves as a major force in the league.

Now to come back, at this moment in history, where we look forward to the future and have the opportunity to strengthen the love of MI and build on the vision of the owners is an exciting challenge that I look forward to,” he said in his official statement.
Jayawardene’s first task will be to finalize the retention of players before the main auction of IPL 2025. Teams can retain up to six players, including up to five players and two uncapped players. This strategic decision will be crucial in shaping the future of the club.
