NBA Expands Coach’s Challenge Review to Out-of-Bottom Games

The NBA’s Board of Governors has approved the expanded use of review of coaches’ challenges in certain out-of-bounds games, saying Tuesday that if foul play was to be called, it could now be reviewed soon after the fact.

Out-of-bounds violations caused by a coach’s challenge will be reviewed by court officials, NBA Replay Center

Under the new rule, if a quick replay of a foul is caused by a coach’s challenge, court officials and the NBA Replay Center will be able to review the video to determine whether a close foul should exist. you have been called.

The league’s board of governors approved this at its meeting in New York. This happened after it was unanimously recommended by the league’s competition committee last week.

According to an NBA press release, the factors that will be considered in determining whether an unreported foul approaches an out-of-bounds violation are below:

  • Whether players involved in an uncalled foul are equal or different than those involved in an out-of-bounds violation is not reviewed.

  • Time has passed between unspoken insults and transgressions beyond review.

Replay Center, court officials will now be able to review the video to see if there was a foul call

NBA commissioner Adam Silver was scheduled to address the meeting later Tuesday. The change will take effect in the 2024-25 season.

The update change was to be used at least once in last season’s playoffs. Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving fouled Minnesota Timberwolves forward Jaden McDaniels, the ball went out of bounds.

No harm was called in the game. However, even though the review clearly showed Irving hitting McDaniels’ arm, the ball was awarded to Dallas. The call was made because it came from McDaniels.

Such out-of-bounds plays initiated by coaching challenges will now be reviewed by court officials and the NBA Replay Center. Both can review the video to determine if it was called incorrectly.

The NBA’s Competition Committee unanimously recommended the rule change to the Board of Governors. The committee consists of players and representatives of the National Basketball Players Association (NBAPA).

Coaches, governors, team and basketball league managers, and referees are also included.
