‘Next season is going to be big’

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero says his club mean business in the Premier League next season.

Spurs impressed in Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge, finishing fifth and securing a place in the 2024-25 Europa League.

The North London side have made a good start under the Australian, sitting at the top after 10 games unbeaten.

But a series of key injuries to the likes of James Maddison and Micky van de Ven saw them slip down the table and eventually sit in fifth place, just shy of a Champions League place with fourth-placed Aston Villa.

Vice-captain Romero had a mixed campaign. He was sent off in a humiliating defeat to Chelsea but returned in 2024 and appeared calm and mature in his performances.

He’s received plenty of praise from fans and pundits over the past few months and has now laid down the gauntlet to next season’s contenders.

Speaking to Tottenham’s club website, he said: “Ange has a winning mentality and has completely changed the direction of the club.

“When he arrived, he brought everyone together and we all have the same attitude and the same approach, we all have the same desire to succeed and win things at this club and that is the key.

“We play in a way that pleases the people and we are all happy with the way the manager supports us and plays. Of course there have been events this season, a lot has happened.

“Let’s not forget, we have a young team with players who are playing their first season in the Premier League – it’s not easy to play in this league.

“You don’t just settle down in two or three months, it’s difficult.

“But, it’s been a decent first season for this top manager, some inconsistencies, but all good.

“I know that we couldn’t keep fighting for the league title, but now we have to try to grow and develop in order to go in the right direction.

“We have to finish well and come back stronger next season. Young players will benefit from this first season of experience, and we will do better. Next season will be a big one for us.”

If Spurs are to challenge at all levels next season, they will need to have a big transfer window.

A number of familiar faces are expected to leave North London, with the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Emerson Royal linked with a move.

Inbounds will be more important as there is a lack of depth in all areas of the field.

Destiny Udogie’s late-season injury meant Van de Ven had to switch to left-back while Yves Bissouma’s knee problem left Spurs light in midfield.

Dethroning Manchester City may be in their plans, but Romero and Co have a lot of work to do if they want to make that happen.
