NHL Rumors: Derek Lalonde, Edmonton Oilers, And Arbitrations
Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey NOW: After what happened last season, the Detroit Red Wings are expected to take this next step in the 2024-25 campaign. This is the third year of Derek Lalonde’s reign. He expects there to be heat.
The defensive side of things has to improve. Detroit missed the playoffs by one point as the Washington Capitals made the playoffs instead.
Steve Yzerman laid down the law.
“It is in the hands of our coaching staff to invest or improve, to continue working, whether it is a different system or to be better in the way we play and improve our players in the system.”
Remember, 11 coaches were fired last season. Be cruel or get fired. In this case, get them to play defense, or get canned.
Other players will need to step up including Alex DeBrincat, Simon Edvinsson, and Vladimir Tarasenko. Scoring will help but Edvinsson can help even more. His defensive progress in 21 gives Detroit hope that he remains in the Top Four.
NHL Rumors: St. Louis Blues and Eastern Conference questions
Don’t forget the goal. Detroit has four pitchers who could start, but they’re also struggling. Cam Talbot, Alex Lyon, Ville Husso, and Jack Campbell will be in some tournaments. One must stand up when it is counted.
There are no Offer Sheets for Holloway and Broberg
Kurt Levins of the Edmonton Journal: Don’t expect offer sheets for RFAs like Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg.
Both players improved and excelled as the season and postseason progressed for the Edmonton Oilers. Many, if not all, in Edmonton, believe they are a big part of the team’s future.
Furthermore, why would they leave a Stanley Cup contender?
Similar to Joe Veleno in Detroit, these Edmonton players will see an upside in their future and a very profitable one at that.

A New Approach to Arbitrations
David Alter of Hockey News: As for other arbitration cases if one is wondering, don’t expect more than a couple to show up on time. Furthermore, no one will listen to anything until the case is somehow resolved. It is like cooling the temperature or reducing the tension.
One wonders if arbitration will be like a traffic court. Small tears? Maybe so.
