NHL Rumors: Detroit Red Wings, and New York Rangers

Leftover Detroit Red Wings D and Shayne Gostisbehere

Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Detroit Red Wings traded defensemen and traded Jake Walman, along with a 2024 second-round pick. They need a roster spot for Simon Edvinsson and Albert Johansson.

GM Steve Yzerman still hopes to re-sign defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere.

RFA’s pending defender, Moritz Seider, is expected to sign a long-term contract. Ben Chiarot, Jeff Petry and Olli Maatta are under contract for next year.

The New York Rangers may not trade Jacob Trouba, and pack Kaapo Kakko and No. 30

Larry Brooks of the NY Post: There has been no indication from the New York Rangers that they will buy out Jacob Trouba for the remaining two years for $8 million.

Sources say they are divided internally on whether to remove Trouba, who will be on the 15-team no-trade list by July 1. He is respected in the room and his leadership as captain has created a great culture.

Ryan Lindgren and Braden Schneider are still pending RFAs and bring a physical game but don’t match what Trouba brings.

If the Rangers decide to move on from Trouba, Dallas Stars pending UFA Chris Tanev could be an option. He could earn as much as $6 million.

The Rangers are believed to be aggressively shopping forward Kaapo Kakko, even after signing him to a one-year, $2.4 million deal. Sources say Rangers GM Chris Drury is packing Kakko and the No. 30 pick to move up in the first round.

Igor Shesterkin’s extension could come in at $11 million (or more). Adding in the hits of Artemi Panarin, Mika Zibanejad, Adam Fox and Vincent Trocheck, that would put them at $45,767 for five players. Add in the estimated extensions for Alexis Lafreniere and K’Andre Miller ($15 million) and that puts them under $61 million for seven players through the 2025-26 season.
