NHL Rumors: The NHL Expansion, and Jeremy Swayman’s Current Status

There is no extended NHL voting yet

TSN: There is a Board of Governors meeting scheduled for next week in New York. Expansion has come up again recently with the cities of Houston and Atlanta being talked about, but don’t expect a vote on expansion according to Chris Johnston.

“And I was told in no uncertain terms that there would be no votes on expansion or the official opening of the expansion process as part of that meeting. I think what will happen is that maybe Gary Bettman will update the current owners of the league with those expressions of interest that the league has been receiving from other cities. But at this point, it’s still a burning issue. I would say for the league. Every reason to believe that expansion is coming somewhere down the line, but let’s touch on the brakes. It’s not coming here any time soon.”

Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman shot down any NHL expansion rumors.

“Everything that was written last week is completely wrong,” Bettman told the newspaper on Monday. “We are not going through the expansion process. And without updating the board on Oct. 1 regarding the areas that have shown interest, nothing more will be done in the expansion.”

The current situation between the Boston Bruins and Jeremy Swayman

TSN: Talks are ongoing between the Boston Bruins and RFA goaltender Jeremy Swayman, but as of Tuesday, things were ready according to Pierre LeBrun. Getting the idea that opening night of the regular season could be the first real deadline.

“The important thing is that Swayman is still focused on getting an eight-year contract. That remains the top priority for him, and the Bruins are looking at a long-term deal as well.

But, you can’t have a Shesterkin conversation without Swayman being tied into it in the sense that it’s a different conversation. Swayman, according to the collective bargaining agreement, is not at the same level of leverage because he will not be a UFA at the end of the year. Therefore, Shesterkin has a high point of exertion.

NHL Rumors: Igor Shesterkin, Linus Ullmark, and Phil Kessel

But for Swayman, there’s a little bit I just talked about. Because all these players have signed whatever they’ve signed in the last few years, Swayman can’t find a way to push.”
